AZ Capitol & Legislature Inspire Arizona Youth Day at the Legislature. LWVMP Helps Students Learn Government in Action

LWV Metro Phoenix has been partnering with an amazing organization that teaches high school students about democracy in action. Perhaps you met the team from Inspire Arizona at our LWVMP holiday luncheon? Students participate for free in this extensive program and your Admin team has been much impressed with Inspire's work.

On Wed., March 2, Paloma Ibanez and Inspire Arizona students from many schools will be attending Youth Advocacy Day at the Arizona Legislature from 8 to 3:30. The Inspire group has asked for some LWV assistance with their program.

Care, Anne, and Andi will be there! Can you help too?

Please contact Care Lengel (602) 538-6561 to sign up! Then contact your community teams and ask for more LWV support. Call your LWV friends not on email about this great opportunity to help kids political participation, and arrange your carpools to the Capitol on March 2.

It's time again for LWV Metro Phoenix to teach by doing!

Marge T's home in Tempe LWVMP East Valley Community Team Meeting. The next meeting of the East Valley Community Team will be on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. at the home of Marge Thornton. Please, as usual, bring a brown bag lunch -- no, we won't be serving corned beef and cabbage so you can have that later in the day.

At our February meeting a suggestion was made that we discuss concerns people have at local, county, state and federal level of government. So, we are asking each of you to interview five people and ask them just that. We should have some pretty interesting results which will make our discussion on the 17th most lively and thought provoking.

For those of you who were not at the last meeting: Sandy Kaszeta and Maureen Schmidt updated us on their work on the presentations they will make in April at Rio Salado Community College in Surprise. They will use some of the questions they used (and gave copies to us) at their recent presentation to the Phoenix community Team. Maureen also told us that there is now a list of those running for Maricopa County offices on the County Recorder's website -- worth looking at!

In April we will be discussing Prop 123 which will be on the ballot in a special election in May. The Metro Phoenix League's annual meeting will be at The Terraces on Saturday, April 16th -- we will most likely carpool from Marge's home. More on that later.

So.....get busy with those interviews! It will be fun to hear what concerns others have, if any. Karen Michael

Judy L's home in Scottsdale. LWVMP Scottsdale Meeting. Concentration of Scottsdale Team: Future development of Scottsdale & related issues: voting, influence of money on decision-making, transportation.

Thursday, April14 from 11-2. We have a guest speaker for part of the meeting, Sonnie Kirstley of COGS (coalition of greater Scottsdale) who will present us with the work her group has been doing and what issues face our city. So, first please contact Paula McKey and tell her when you'd like to visit the city council. Her email address is: pkmckey@gmail.com. Any questions about our League group, call me at 480 907 6800 or email at judlev2@gmail.com.

Scottsdale City Government Observations: Volunteer to attend the city council meetings for the next few months. Attend along with another League person, neighbor or spouse for company or by yourself. If you have a LWV button, we suggest you wear it. Just as we want to get to know the "players" on the council better, we'd like them to know that we are interested in what they do and their 'vision' for the future of our city. So, please pick a date or two from those on those on the list and plan to attend. It is fine if we have a few people for the same meeting. We'd just like to cover as many dates as possible. We'd also appreciate your letting us know what was covered and any impressions you have of the meeting or council members's views. Remember to send any dates you suggest to Paula McKey directly since she is keeping the schedule for us.

Scottsdale Community Team Meeting. Hi and a Happy New Year to you all.... 2017 promises to be a busy one with all of us extra- vigilant and involved in our political scene, locally as well as nationally.

This is just a reminder that our next meeting will be held on WEDNESDAY, January 11 at my house, starting at 9:30 am . I had to change the meeting date to Wednesday for January due to a conflict.

We will be discussing the proposed DDC (Desert Discovery Center) being proposed and planned by a committee set up by the city council. A few of us have already met with some of the planners, visited the proposed site and attended 'educational workshops ' given by the planners and architects. Things are a bit quiet now, but expect that suddenly the Spring will bring a renewal of often vitriolic conversation about this proposal as Council members and citizens collide on the issue and , hopefully, more developed ideas for the project are presented. During this relatively quiet time, we should be researching whatever we can on the issue. Please scout the newspapers , TV and other media for material and bring it to us. Reps from both sides of the issue would like to speak with us. We should be well prepared with substantive questions for those meetings. This is both interesting and exciting and a job for which League is well-suited.

I shall be sending regular attendees the agenda for our next meeting in a few days, possibly with the minutes of our Dec. meeting as well. I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Jan. 11 Enjoy the return of the sun... 🌵☀ Judy

Scottsdale Community Team Meeting. Since the election, our League has been contacted by many people who wish to be involved in "doing something" to maintain and improve the country we love. I think we all share that feeling.

That explains why I haven't been in touch as often as usual. This is your monthly reminder that we are meeting at my home this Thursday, Feb. 9. Please try to be here by 9:30 since we have a guest speaker who will be arriving at 9:45. Sam Campana, former mayor and council member of the Scottsdale City council and now head of the commission working on the proposal for a Desert Discovery Center, will present us with a program and update on the project. She will also be answering our questions about it. We willl have a chance to discuss the subject after she leaves as well. We may have some of the mos recent of new members with us. Please introduce yourself. My collection of name tags will be in the kitchen for your use. Since I'm not sure of numbers fro this meeting , please rsvp to this email so I know how many chairs to arrange, etc. Also a quick reminder that the metro-"phoenix" team will be meeting on Wednesday at the Terraces. Our legislation guru Anne Schneider will be speaking. Rivko Knox is probably sending you info on this as well. I'm looking forward to seeing you all on this Thursday. Let me know.

Scottsdale Community Team Meeting. Hello and welcome to the League.... Some of you are old timers and others just joined. We have grown so quickly in the past few months that we need your input on what you are interested in, so the information can be put on a data base. That will help us get you connected to the people and activities in which you are most interested. If you have special skills, ( social media, finance, etc) let me know.

I also know that just because you live in Scottsdale doesn't mean you are interested in what our local team is doing. But, you'll be getting anything I send out to those who attend our monthly meetings... held on the second Thursday of every month at my home.

The LWV Metro Phoenix Scottsdale Community Team is currently doing a study of the Desert Discovery Center being planned for being built on conservancy lands in North Scottsdale at the Gateway trail. Our next meeting will be on April 13 and begins at 8:30. I'll be sending you an email later this month with more details.
