Debates and Forums

Leagues across the nation are known for their work in hosting nonpartisan candidate debate and issues forums. Hearing and seeing candidates engage in healthy debates before an election is an important part of our democracy. Candidate debates help our members and the community determine which candidates align with their values and which ones they want to support with their votes. Issues Forums provide voters in the community an opportunity to hear from experts and elected officials on issues for which the League (National, State or Local) has a public policy position.

Every election year LWVMP hosts candidate debates for local municipal elections and provides support for candidate debates at the state level.  Local elections run the gamut of city government, local school boards and local commissions. Due to our deep roots and long history of nonpartisanship, communities across the country have put their trust in the League to host these events. We are often called on to moderate debates by community groups. In fact, issues that matter to communities arise regardless of the election cycles.  We offer many forums to educate, advocate and engage the public on these issues.
