Advocacy and Action

The League of Women Voters advocates on issues of importance at the National, State and Local level. At the local level we work to promote our positions and principles at the county, city and school district level. Currently, we have issues teams focusing on sustainability criminal justice and education.

Observing Government in Action - LWVMP Observer Corps
LWV has been an active champion of openness in government throughout its history, working to ensure transparency and accountability of the lawmakers. The Observer Corps is a structured way to exercise their “right to know” and, thus, provide a valuable service to the community. They help ensure that citizens are aware of the decisions that impact their lives and they promote government transparency and accountability. Observers also assist the league in staying  informed about issues that are important to the league.  Members attend government meetings, note what happens, and report back to the League. The League can then take that information and use it to educate our members or possibly  advocate on a specific issue.

Lobbying

League lobbying is an advocacy technique to influence specific legislation or policies of a government entity.  It involves a concerted effort to achieve public policies consistent with League positions. League Boards at every level set their own lobbying priorities. Legislative lobbying is organized and managed by the State advocacy committee.  With our close proximity to the state capitol, the state advocacy committee leans heavily on Metro league members to serve as volunteer lobbyists.  LWVUS and LWVAZ public policy positions are the official statements for each issue area and are used by all leagues in determining areas for advocacy and lobbying.
